It's fun to grow something different. I'd like to try mirlitons sometime if I could find some to plant. I planted some purple carrots last fall. I've got a pineapple plant from a top that I planted about a year ago.

I see them in the local grocery stores. But they are under the name of chayote squash. Not sure if they will grow.. I did not see any starting to sprout.

These places have some normal stuff, but they also have some amazing cool stuff, too. Some varieties are rare and in danger of being lost, so if you grow some, you are helping to perpetuate the variety. Malibar spinach is another you could try. I got a couple of little pots of it at the City Park Garden Show last fall. It is a vining green, not truely a spinach but tastes like it and can be used instead of spinach. It is also invasive, just like Jerusaleum artichoke is.
