Go in March. It is by far the best time to go as it starts to get really hot and humid starting in May.

Agreed, if you don't like heat, don't pick June! Nancy, New Orleans really is kind of one big garden. Take some long slow walks through the French Quarter, take the streetcar to the Garden District and Uptown. The azaleas will probably be done blooming by then, but that's a beautiful time of year to visit. The Botanical Garden is nice.
