Hollyhocks in the NO area?

Has anyone in the New Orleans area been successful with growing hollyhocks? I started some from seeds I received in a trade. I have 5 that are growing really well, and will be transplanted along a fence for support this spring.
With all the heat and humidity, are there any special
growing conditions I need to know about? This will be their second year so I should see blooms. Any suggestions and help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

| I have a friend who grew some in Chalmette a few years ago. I think she got rid of them b/c they weren't doing well. Keep in mind that they are a biannual, which means they may not bloom the 1st year. Michelle |

| In Hattiesburg, just about as hot and humid as NOLA, hollyhocks do great for me, even reseeding to some extent. They like full blazing sun and somewhat dry feet, so in NOLA I suggest a raised bed. Give them lots of air circulation. Then can be subject to rust, but i have not experienced that problem. There are many types and i suggest you just keep planting different ones until you find some that do well for you because they are a great, old-fashioned garden plant. You might try some of the old non-hybrids for toughness. I plant the seeds in the fall and they come up in early spring or late winter. I think late november would be about the right time to plant them in NOLA, late october here. |
