Transplanting old azalea bushes

I acquired 4 older azalea bushes that need to be put in the ground in the morning. They were dug up willy nilly because my friend just wanted them out so their root balls are significantly smaller. They are pretty big. Should I cut them down since the root balls are so small? I don't want to end up killing them but don't want them stressed because there is too much plant for the root to sustain.

Yes, cut them back so they have a fair chance.

Yes, I totally agree. Cut them back to maybe a foot or 18 inches. I would not fertilize but I would try to get a liquid root stimulator or transplant solution which will help them make roots. I would plant them with organic matter if I had it (compost) and mulch and water well. They will need to be watered regularly.

UPDATE: I cut the azaleas back significantly (they were about 5 feet tall and I cut them back to about 18 inches) and they have looked awful. I'm sure my neighbors are talking about me :) They are finally starting to put out little buds where there will be leaves so I think they are going to make it. They are in a place where they will get full sun and I have a feeling they are not going to love it there but I will give it a year and if they limp along, they will be moved to the other side of the fence or house.
