| Back neighbors shed destroyed by Katrina, left open area
about 8-10 feet. as the fencing is destroyed, need quick
growing & dense shrubs. have thought of holly but would
like color for a change. has anyone had success with
Barberry, which also has berries for the birds.
Any suggestions would be appreciated |

| Is it sun or shade? The birds love my Mahonia bealei, which has sprays of fragrant yellow flowers along about January and blue berries the birds strip with great relish. One year when we had extra-cold weather the hummingbirds really appreciated the flowers when I didn't get the thawed feeders out fast enough. I think it prefers shade but will take some sun--probably not full sun tho'. I have the impression barberry doesn't really like it too much over here in Lafayette so might not like New Orleans either. There are some that are better than others I think. Mahonia is a relative of barberry, and there are other mahonias. |

| There are many Hollies that would do the trick. No real flowers, but bright red berries make a good substitute. |

| You might consider a clumping, medium height Bamboo or possibly some fast growing and relatively easy maintenence Vibrnum. G'luck. Sam in Covington |

| Let crape myrtles go multitrunk and bushy. Don't get dwarfs, because they grow slowly. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I have planted Eleagnus ebbingii, likeed its looks & shape. Planted a couple of weeks ago 7 they seem to be doing well. If it would only RAIN!! If the eleagnus does not work out, i will get the bamboo. House has been abandoned, yard is the same condition since the storm. Am really tired of the view. |
