| A friend just dropped off several small camelias. How do I plant them and care for them? I live in north Ms. |

| Well, since no one else has answered, I'll try, but you must remember I'm down south so it may differ somewhat. We have very heavy dense clay. To plant camellias here we dig a very shallow basin about half the depth of the root ball, place the plant in the hole. If it's balled and burlapped and it's real burlap and not that plastic stuff they sometimes use, after you put it in the hole unfasten the burlap and lay it out, and cover it with the native soil. Then mound soil up to the top of the root ball and out beyond the root ball so you have a shallow mound. Then add a couple inches of mulch--I prefer pine straw or oak leaves, but bark works well too--up almost to the trunk of the plant. Leave a little space around the trunk so it's not planted deeper than it was previously. If you have a lighter sandier soil you can plant it more nearly the same level instead of 'above-grade', but be sure you have good drainage. And I think the mulch is quite important too. You might want to check on the Camellia forum too--I'm hardly an expert. |
