| I just planted a whole bunch of bulbs this weekend but I'm afraid they won't bloom. They are summer blooming but I'm afraid that means spring blooming for us in Baton Rouge. I always plant my bulbs in the fall but I just moved to a new house so I had no choice but to plant them now. Will they bloom?
Calla
Lilies
Dahlia
Gladiolus
Iris
Ranunculus

| Callas will bloom just fine. Louisiana irises will probably not bloom. I have had lilies bloom when planted late. With the cool weather this year anything is possible though. |

| Callas: Yes, if you transplanted a whole clump, or they were pot-grown. Lilies: Possibly. Depends on the type. (Daylilies: probably: esp. if pot-grown). Lilium Formosanum blooms in August or September, and so would have time to become established before blooming. Dahlias: Almost certainly. Gladiolus: Absolutely! Iris: Only if transplanted in clumps, or pot-grown. Ranunculus: Probably will wither in the heat. Hopefully, some of your 'lilies' were Crinums and Agapanthus. It would have been a perfect moment to plant Agapanthus. Hymenocallis and Amaryllis are both excellent bulbs for your area, too. |

| I know nothing about lilies, but recently became very interested in crinum lilies and ordered them online. Several different kinds, including two that were large, "blooming size" bulbs - Helen McRory and Imperial Guard, and one "jumbo size" bulb, Cecil Houdyshel. Also 10 of the Hannibal's Dwarf. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they live, because pictures of them are so beautiful. We are in a new house, as well, and the landscaper planted agapanthus for us. I had them at our old house and they bloomed every year. Last year being the first year, blooms were rather sporadic. I hope this year brings more blooms. I've hesitated to plant callas because I've read they are messy and also attract worms. But when they are in bloom, they are breathtaking. |

Callas don't seem to have a problem, but cannas are mess if they aren't cared for as those leave rollers make a meal of a lot of leaves if not stopped early. The glads probably will be okay but the dahilas will die when the hot weather cooks them. They just don't like our summer weather. Lilies do well down here, just don't mix varieties as day, asian are known to stun each others growth when planted to close together. Paul |
