Just Saying Hello

Just wanted to say hello. The name is Rick or Ricky, and I'm in northern MS, a small town named Pontotoc.

There doesn't seem to be much activity in this forum at the moment, but perhaps it'll pick up in the coming months as things begin to grow (yes, bad pun intended) more active, garden-wise.

My interest is in vegetable gardening and, at the moment, I'm attempting my almost-first attempt at square foot gardening. I started late in an attempt last year, but this year I have the full growing season to give it a try.

Again, just saying hello to all.

Rick

Hello Rick,

Welcome and good luck with your new garden. This is a slow forum but the best way to get it moving is to start posting.

I have a couple of acres near Hackley Louisiana and this my second year with a garden about 700 sq ft. I transplanted tomatoes, eggplant, cayanne, bell peppers, banana peppers, jalapenos last week. Most of those where started under florescent lights in January. The lettuce, english peas, limas, and mustard have been in the ground since January and are doing well. The brussel sprouts and brocolli did nothing. My peach trees and blueberries are in full flower while the blackberrys, mars grapes, muscadines, niagra grapes and figs are just starting to wakeup.

Keep in touch.

Hi Rick, very small garden here ... less than 150 sq. ft. A third of that is flowers and herbs, so there's not much room for tomatoes and peppers. Still have chard and dill from the fall garden, but I'll need to pull more of that to squeeze in a few more tomatoes.

We started the garden about 20 years ago using the square foot method. After that first year abandoned some of Mel's guidelines and set our own. You quickly learn what works and what doesn't. Hope to completely redo the garden next year. Make it a little bigger with wider paths and different shaped beds.

Al, sounds like you have a nice variety. I start my tomatoes & peppers on top of the fridge then move them to the cold frame. In the past week the tomatoes outgrew it, so I started transplanting.

Oh, what a lovely picture. Everything is so fluffy and green. (sigh)

Very nice Harper,

I set most of my early transplants a day too early and lost them to a late freeze so I started again a couple of weeks ago.

I hope I can get mine to look as good as yours. The're nicer than the plants available from the feed store.

Al
