I am a UL student designing a natural playground and kids community garden. Any ideas on native and tropical plants that will help to create a play environment? I also need a good fast growing tree species to experiment with pleaching and grafting to build a play structure.

Sabal minor is native to LA and MS. As for grafting trees, I'm not sure what you're looking for.

The Longue Vue House and Gardens has a children's garden that may give you ideas. They have a terrific planting of lamb's ears, sensitive plant and chenille plant for the kids to explore. They also have bamboo or willow plantings that create a tunnel. I think I had more fun exploring the kids area than the formal gardens.

A live oak can be pruned in such a way as to have low branches for climbing.
