Is it possible (with wintertime TLC) to grow a Blue Jacaranda in Beautiful Baton Rouge, LA? Anyone doing it now? How fast do they grow? Any problems with disease or pests? Thanks for your help!

I was wondering where there was a zone 9b, Bootville? Venice? And hoping sonmeone would respond.

I assume you mean the jacaranda acutifolia (http://www.floridata.com/ref/j/jaca_acu.cfm) Which is a zone 9-11. Baton Rouge as I recall is a high zone 8.

I read elsewhere that mature trees do better with frost than younger trees.
Seems, if you can find a more mature tree or baby it through the first few years.... It might work.

But then we may be getting ready to cycle through 20-30 years of colder winters.

If you try the blue jacarda. And it works. Let me know. This tree, red sealing wax palms, travellers palms and royal poinciana are my dream trees.

I don't see why not. We rarely get temps in the low 20s. It has only gone below 20 degrees 3 or 4 times in the last 40 years. Baton Rouge is both 8b and 9a depending on where you live and who's chart you use.

I've been growing the jacaranda mimosifolia (blue jacaranda) in the ground for 3 years. It was a small seedling and is under an oak tree canopy which has protected from frost. It has never bloomed but has survived just fine under those conditions. This might be the year for blooms.
