schizanthus - Poor Man's Orchid

Has anyone had any experience in Louisiana or Mississippi heat with this one? I saw it at Stines today and seriously want some, but research says it likes things cool and moist.

Hi, I don't have any experience with that plant, but I do grow Chinese Ground Orchids; Bletilla Striata and they are blooming now. Sherri

Hey lagardenergirl,
I haven't tried schizanthus, but I do have some Chinese
ground orchid (Bletilla hyacinthina). They have done
well in my yard and have doubled since last year.
They were one of the first things to bloom this
year and do resemble small purple orchids. Just
lovely. Good luck with your garden.

I, too, have wished I could grow them but was told they wouldn't take the heat and humidity. I used to grow them in western Washington state, where it's cool and moist, and tend to believe those who told me not to try. Camellias do well both places, but not very many things do.
