Bamboo Transplanting

I'm needing to plant a screen to block out an unsightly view. We have several old farm places that have bamboo growing there, but I have no idea what kind it is or how to transplant it. I've been reading a lot but can't find much about Louisiana bamboo. I have a large area that I need to cover (approx 500 - 700 feet). Any ideas on how close to plant the transplants ...etc? Need as much info as possible!!! Of course I want instant 20 foot screens!!Ha!

There is a Louisiana grower in Southeast Louisiana. I spoke with a couple of times and he seems to have a very good selection. I will try and find the link for you.

I've never done it. But I have a guess as to how to do it for a spreading type of bamboo.

Go to the edge of the patch of bamboo. Look for a shoot that is just BARELY erupting from the ground. Then carefully move the dirt away from it. There should be a runner. Cut the runner about ten inches from either side of the new shoot. Take note of how deep the runners are and then go plant them the same depth. This would be the time of year to do it.

If you want a bunch of bamboo, chop a patch down almost level to the ground, disk up the soil, find the runners in the loose soil, cut them into pieces somewhere around two feet long and then plant them at the same depth roughly as you found them. Water of course.

If someone posts something different than what I just said... follow their advice.

Thanks for the advice. I've had trouble getting back to the web, but we did transplant thirty large clumps two weeks back. We have been watering every day. Can't say it's a fence yet, but it's not dead either!! Wish me luck!
