Can someone tell me if they know what this is? I just moved to this area from Metairie and the yard I inherited was a mess!!! At first, I thought these were cannas coming up and I must have dug out hundreds!! Now this one has bloomed and I see how gorgeous it is and I could kick myself for digging up so many of them!!!!

This is called a Hidden Ginger. Mine are blooming now as well. After the bloom finishes it will make leaves. Pretty isn't it?

Oh, I'm so jealous. I love gingers - but they all require shade, don't they? -- we're in a new house, with no shade, so I don't have a chance, until our trees grow a little taller and more leaves. Our pre-Katrina house we had lots of shade in the backyard, and someone gave me some butterfly gingers - they were so fragrant.
