The bugs are already attacking!

| I went out to check my garden this morning and there were small black bugs on my tomato, watermelon and bush bean babies. My cucumbers are being eaten from the inside out too. The battle has begun already. Yes, it is nice to be in South with our long growing season but the bugs are rediculous! Two days ago everything was fine and today my plants have holes in them :( |

Dipel Dust, contains Bacillus thuringiensis horticultural oil horticultural soap and learn the Southern way of living with things bad and good. Isn't that why you moved down here, 'cause it's laid back? |

| I've always lived here so I'm used to the constant swatting. This is my first attempt at organic gardening though. I've always had veg gardens but relied on Sevin dust to save my plants. Even Sevin dust has never saved my squash from the EVIL squash bugs. Any suggestions? My plan of action so far is to trellis the squash, zuccini and melons. I've planted Nastriums but could not find borage anywhere. I bought some Neem oil today. I'm going to replant cucumbers in another part of the garden as I think that whatever got them was left over from last year. Last year all I had was peppers and tomatoes which I love but I would like some eggplant, melons and cucumbers this year too. Well, at least the bugs eat well in my garden :) |

| I don't raise food crops, but the Bt is really effective on all sorts of caterpillars. Use like Sevin. I only apply it every here-and-there on my cannas and it does a good job on the leafrollers. Neem is the ingredient in both the oil and the soap. You could also plant marigolds. Try also the mixes that fella on public TV does, with soap and tobacco 'tea'. I would imagine hot pepper 'teas' would be good too |
