Well, that is a hard question. I beleive the irises need or like more water than the daylillies. I am not familiar with all the varieties, but the Stellas are some of the easiest to grow. In general, all plants need more care their first year. So you should probably water them with a good soaking at the base, not overhead sprinkling or spraying with the hose, each week that there hasn't been a good rain. All of these plants will spread and make more, and should be divided (usually) every 3-5 years. Your bed is not very deep and it sounds like you've allowed about 1 ft per plant, so they might get a bit crowded sooner than that. You might have to divide them sooner. It is always a good idea to mulch with an organic material, that is to say wood chips, shredded wood, dried grass clippings, pine straw, compost. When I lived in St. Bernard I used cypress mulch, the shredded kind. In my opinion, topsoil is a very heavy and not very "nutritious" soil, and I'm not sure what "garden soil" is exactly. So the mulch will help add organic material, and if you can get or make compost, it would be good to add that. You can toss a couple handfuls around each plant and then mulch. See how it goes. If you are in N.O. there is a radio show that used to be every Saturday by Dan Gill on gardening (2 hrs). You can call in with questions. There is alot of info from your county (parish) agent and from LSU Horticulture or LSU Ag, you can find them online, just search those words. There are a ton of garden groups like Iris, daylilly, rose socieities and garden shows. I'm not sure how much of this has come back after Katrina, since I had to move away. I'm almost positive that the spring and fall garden shows and sales have returned to City Park, where loads of free info is available. Good luck with all of it.

Hey, I know you must have gotten those at Lowe's. Those were the exact varieties being sold at the Lowe's in Slidell. My Ming Toy is already blooming-nice color. I know daylilies are a breeze. Show even a modicum of care and they'll be fine.
