Our back yard is a maze of tunnels, and we're desperate to stop the destruction. Help, please!

Check with your local parish animal control, they may provide the traps to you for free or suggest how to get rid of them.

You must live near a woody area. they used to tunnel out in fall and through the winter then head back to the woods as it warmed. Sorry. To answer your question. My dog used to dig them up.

I'm glad to hear that the moles in my garden will soon head to the woods. My dogs love to dig, dig, dig, when they see a fresh tunnel, and I saw one in the area where I planted Lady Fern and Casablanca Lilies (The White Flower Farm special).

The biggest problem with the dogs digging them up. We have a pet door and on a number of occasions I came home to find a trophy on the bed. Also the dog holes weren't a lot nicer than the tunnels. We also planted Casablance Lilies a number of years ago. And still have them. But I was suspicious that either the moles or squirrels were eating the bulbs. But,I wasn't sure. About 4 years ago a developer, developed the wooded lots next door. Since then. No more problems with tunnels.

They're actually kind of cute with their pointy noses and very fine fur. But they can be a pain. Like I said, my problem was seasonal and is over. Either the dogs got them all, or they moved on. The side and back yard looked like spagetti at times. I had considered the spike traps. But you have the traps in the yard, and have to hope they tunnel into the trap. I tried flooding the tunnels, chopping into them especially where it seemed to end with the shovel or garden rake. My understanding. They're looking for grubs and other small insects just under the surface. If you could get rid of the grubs. Perhaps you could get rid of the reason for them hanging around. Otherwise those spikes you put on your shoes to aireate the lawn. You might step on one.

Actually, I think the dog holes are worse than the mole tunnels. An elderly neighbor helped me with a lawnmower problem not long ago and almost fell after stepping in one of those holes. If I hadn't been by his side, he really might have hurt himself. I'd have a fit if I found a dead mole in the center of my bed - loving gift of my dogs or not! One of my cats brings her toy stuffed mouse and dumps it on me in bed sometime during the night. I live in fear she finds a real one! At a Hosta society meeting a couple of years back a former county extension agent presented a program on moles and voles. He reported that though there are lots of products on the market that claim to repel moles, nothing really works except the spike trap. Also, even though the moles are only eating grubs, etc., voles will use the mole tunnels to get at the plant roots. If it's not one thing it's something else.
