Evil Evil Sedge

I just bought a new house and there is sedge everywhere! It's in the lawn, it's popping up in my garden, and it's even in the cracks in the concrete! I applied Sedgehammer to every sedge plant I could find but I can't tell if it is really working. The problem with Sedgehammer is that it can't be applied to annual garden beds and I made the mistake of applying it around some young sunflower plants and now I am paying the price. Am I doomed to pulling these out every weekend?

You can pull them on weekdays, too.

Are you talking about nutgrass, by any chance?

That stuff if incorrigible. It's all over the place and we will never get rid of it. Weedcloth slows it down, but eventually, it will pierce the weedcloth, but it does put a dent in the vigor of the nutgrass.

There used to be a nutgrass killer, but you had to put it onto each plant with a dropper!!!

gtuccil: Are you still having problems with the Sedge? Sedgehammer is a surefire way to kill it out, but you have to mix it right. Also, you need to wait at least 2-3 days before you mow, after application. That will give it time to start working.

Sedgehammer and Image definitely worked but I sprayed my encore azaleas by accident and have paid the price.

I put the landscape fabric down and now they are coming at me two ways....they are piercing through the fabric and they are growing in the mulch where it is not deep. The only solution I have found is mulching my beds up to 6 inches. This is complete overkill but it is working. I live in a new neighborhood where there are acres of bare dirt that only get mowed once a month and sedge is free to grow and seed. On the positive side, I know I will always have something to do and that is pull up sedge.
