does anyone know what this is? it is under alot of my hawthornes and also have found some in my back flower bed around mums, could it be some type of fungus? when i was watering my garden one day last week i noticed smoke, and thought someone had thrown a cigarrte across the fence.the more i water the more smoke.so i decided to see what was going on and found these little balls ,i took a twig and as i touched it it seemed to blow up .i have never seen this before.any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I believe those are called "Puff balls". The smoke is made of spores. I don't think they hurt anything.

Here's a link for more info:

Well... they're harmless and kinda interesting...and the only thing that MIGHT work is a fungicide.

And you really shouldn't spread chemicals unless necessary. My two cents.

Really, they should go away on their own about as fast as they appeared.

I remember as a kid stomping on these to get them to puff their smoke. Harmless in every way and really entertaining for kids.
