It was late at night, and it was flying around my yellow butterfly bush. I could have sworn it was a hummer by the way it was drinking nectar, but it was way too small. Any idea what this is??
It is a member of the sphinx moths, sometimes called hawk moths because of the way they swoop, or hummingbird moths because of the way they hover. If you really want to see them in the evening, plant moonvine and four o'clocks. They particularly love the moonvine and you can see them hovering waiting for the bloom to open at sunset.
If you have a vegetable garden you don't want to see these flying around. The sphinx moth lays eggs that hatch into tomato hornworms. The hornworms can strip tomato and pepper plants very quickly.
