 o
N Louisiana Creole Garlic growers here?

I've posted in the alliums forum, but thought I may have better luck here...
On May 11 I found the my Xian was ready to dig, and today I dug my Chinese Pink, Shantung Purple, and Lorz Italian. This will probably be the last year for the Lorz Italian but the others I've dug produced decent bulbs overall.
I have Music - 6 hills, Siberian - 7 hills, Mother of Pearl - 45 hills, Creole Red - 33 hills, Ajo Rojo Creole - 40 hills, Spanish Morado Creole - 34 hills, Burgundy Creole - 60 hills that aren't ready.
The Music, Siberian, and Mother of Pearl are green and appear to still be growing, although I have had a few scapes.
Judging from the foliage I would think my creole varieties were ready, but all bulbs are very small... 1" or so on those I've checked. The leaves and stems are browned up like grass that had been sprayed with roundup four or five days. I was under the impression that the creoles thrived in the deep south, but maybe I'm not deep enough? Are there any special things that creole varieties require? All of these varieties were set out at the same time in the same raised bed last November.

Where did you find the creole varieties?

We had a rather wet spring here in Houston but a very dry summer (37 days no rain--half inch finally yesterday!). But I hear ya'll have been getting alot of rain...I know garlic likes dry conditions toward the end of the season. Could that be the problem?

Seemed to me that our winter and spring was about normal for rainfall, but last year was very wet... If anything I would think the garlic needed a little more water than it received, as it's in a raised bed.
I'm going to try some of the creoles again this fall, but if there's no improvement I'll forget them and stick with the turban varieties that seemed to do better this year.
My Music and Siberian also turned out pretty good, but the Mother of Pearl didn't amount to much.

Here is a link that might be useful: Creole garlic source

Other sources for creole garlic can be found in the "Louisiana Market Bulletin" and info can be found at www.ldaf.state.la.us. Another source is the similar market bulletin from the State of Mississippi and it can be viewed online. Both will have listings for garlic etc.

We have not planted creole garlic in awhile but when we did we had no problems and had excellent results. Creole was all we would plant. It was always planted on a row in the garden. I have always had better results in row grown crops than in raised beds. I have both and mainly use the raised beds for any extra plants that I have left over. There are pro's and con's to both types.

I am aware of the LA and MS Market Bulletins, and have used both, but I was unable to find any reference to garlic in either publication when I checked after reading your post.

Thanks for the link; I ordered some today...they have a 100% approval rating from Dave's watchdog site too. Will have to [post next summer and let you know how they are doing...have grown garlic before in Houston just not this year.
