Lily of the Nile

Went to Walmart today and saw this beautiful plant but I know nothing about it. Does it do well here? How long is the bloom time?

I am trying Lily of the Nile, agapanthis (agapanthus?) this year for the first time. A friend gave me a clump of them this spring when she split hers. They have been growing well for her in Gautier MS for a few years. I then bought a few clumps from Lowes and they are all doing well so far.

There are a number of threads in the forum where they discuss this plant. Do a search and you'll find plenty of info.

I've been growing agapanthas in Lake Charles, LA for 15 years. They have bloomed every year. In bloom right now. Bloom in shade or full sun. Doesn't seem to matter.

I have the lavender one which makes a bloom as large as a volley ball. The bloom lasts a very long time too. I live south of Houma, La.

The light-purple one makes a full, round ball of flowerettes. There is one out called "Elaine" that is the most beautiful dark purple you ever saw. However, I've never seen these "Elaine's" form a full ball.

Agapanthus flourish in our climate. I've seen stems nearly as big around as a golf ball and 4 feet high.

Anyone have experiance with the white variety?

I have a couple of the white variety (were purchased as purple). They perform identical to the purples that I have.

Mine bloom in shade and sun, in the ground and in pots.

I have two mini-purples in a curb-side mailbox bed that did not bloom. I suspect a combination of excess heat from the pavement and canine watering have stressed them.

bigoledude, thanks for the info on "Elaine." When we moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2001, our landscaper planted our gardens, a little this, a little that. Our agapanthus were stunning, from the first year on, deep, dark purple, but never fully opened, which didn't matter. Neither my landscaper nor I were familiar with Elaine. They were so beautiful and the envy of the neighborhood. I really worried about one neighbor who would tell me he was going to steal them when I went out of town! Katrina took care of that for us, but I'm happy to say we'll be moving to a new home next month and those will be the first flowers I buy. I hope they like my new soil as much as they did my old.

theboss003 on ebay is who I bought my pair of white agapanthus from for $6.99 plus shipping. They are small but healthy plants that were too small to bloom this year.

I'll try to remember to up-date when they bloom.
