Hello People,
I live in MS the central area, just a bit south of Jackson.
I moved here from California in 1999, so had to adjust to a different climent. The last few days have been nice so have been working in the garden. This year we're having a bigger vegetable and flower garden. Tomorrow is another nice day so I plan on doing more planting. I want some beets but need the seeds. I'm not sure what is best for here. Do any of you know what would be good? I have a lot of shade here so try to plant things that can take some shade. I read that beets do ok with some shade.

My daughter lives very close to us and we share our plants and garden tools. That's nice that we have a lot in common. We also love to paint in oils and both of of us love to cook. Finding new ways to cook what we grow is fun and we've been doing raw green smoothies in our blinders.
Can hardly wait for our tomatoes to be ripe. Those store bought tomatoes just don't cute the mustard!
:-)

Hey Nina1,

I'm just a little south of Jackson too. Never grown beets and the only time I used any was in my juicing phase. Which I'm over with for the time being. The paper in our area show cased recipes for them this week. She also said that you haven't had beets unless you've had them fresh.

The co-op's (Gallman, Brandon) or Hutto's in Jackson should be able to help you and answer your questions.

We grow lots of tomato's and you are right about the taste compared to store bought.

Welcome to Garden Web,
Ramona

hello! I live on the coast in waveland. lived here all my life cept for 10 years i spent over in atlanta. My grandpa grows tomatoes every year for last 80 years i think heheh. But this year he come up with a new contraption. He plants them in a 5 gallon bucket with a hole cut in the bottom so the vine grows out the bottom of the bucket. then hangs the bucket from his lines. he just pulls the lids off to water them. works great. I only grow plants and flowers. there is no need for me to grow veggie between my pops and mom we are covered up in them!

I see a display of heirloom seeds at Rainbow Health Food Co-op (in Fondren, at the end of Lakeland). Heirloom beets will probably be the most practical to grow. South-of-Jackson is a pretty part of the Metroplex. Hope you're enjoying the Summer. Blueberries and Asparagus are also good things to grow in less sunny spots, although those will take a while to establish.
