Dying Tomato Plants

My Big Beef tomato plants are dying, I'm not sure from what. Maybe disease or too much rain, then too much heat. I've lost or am losing 6 of my 7 plants. I have 2 cherry tomato plants that seem to be OK, so far anyway. I heard on the news last night that the commercial growers are losing plants. Anybody else having problems?

Also, in just that past 3 days losing tomatoes to wilt, it seems. Suspect it's in my soil. Is that what yours are doing also, just wilting and dying within a couple days? My understanding is that this is caused by a fungus in the soil and there's nothing you can really do about it except purchase plants which are tended to be resistent to the disease. Once it's in your soil, you're just out o' luck, it seems--can't grow the tomatoes in that spot again for many years. However, my mom asked me if it might be cutworms that ate through the stem just below the soil level. I too would like to know what's going on with our tomatoes this year. We've not had too much rain here-too little, but I've watered like crazy. So, can't find any other explanation other than the wilt. |

You can buy the blite when you buy the tomato plant.I start mine from seed so you don't have to worry buying a disease too.All you can do is get rid of the plants and try somemore in another place.Good luck Jim

It is my understanding that there is something you can spray in or on the soil to prevent the wilt. Something like Dithane (not sure this is correct but you could ask) - sold at our local Feed & Garden Center.

It's strange that I've lost 6 of my 7 Big Beef plants, supposely a super, disease resistant tomato. The two cherry tomatos, non-hybrids,are doing OK. And the remaining Big Beef is OK. They're all planted together in a square foot type of garden.
