Daylily Farms in Southern Louisiana

I live in Maurice (just south of Lafayette) and I was wondering if anyone knows of any daylily farms close to the area that I can tour and purchase. I already have approx 50 varieties but you can never have too many.

Thanks for your help.

There is a day lilly farm in Iowa. I'm sorry but I do not know the name of it and have not been there. It appears to be highly thought of locally.

Then, of course, there is Louisiana Nursery on Hwy 182 in Opelousas. They hybridize and have hundreds. You can access them on their website. The prices run from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars just depending. Their website can keep you busy for hours. Beautiful stuff and just up the road from you.

Call the Mayor of Iowa, Mrs. Margo Racca, and ask her. She is president of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation and knows all that kind of stuff in your area.

Go to the AHS website. There are some outstanding daylily nurseries in Louisiana and one in particular in your region. The name is Guidry but I can't remember the name of the nursery.

It's probably Patrick Guidry! I used to work with him at a local CPA firm. His prices range from $25 - $300 and he has very few in the $25 - $100 range.

Did you make it to the Daylily Festival in Abbeville? There were lots there. I don't know how big a business my friend Lucy Menard in Erath is doing now, but I know she sells daylilies at her home and does some hybridizing. She has had some health problems and her daylily 'patch' isn't as big as it used to be, but she buys very nice new ones as well as having some older varieties, and is very reasonable. Patrick Guidry's mother was a top breeder for many years, and I suspect he is a better businessman. I'm afraid that sounds a little snide, and I don't know but what that's how I feel, but I know it isn't fair. You can hardly stay in business if you don't charge enough to cover your expenses and make at least a little profit. We as customers shouldn't complain as much as we do sometimes, me included, when the plant we want costs a lot from a specialist nursery that cares about selling a healthy plant with an accurate name instead of an unnamed plant with few roots for the sake of getting us in the store to buy lumber or insulation.

Thanks for your information but I'm afraid you misunderstood my post. I worked with Patrick Guidry for years - his daylilies are beautiful. I just cannot justify spending $300 on 1 fan and "maybe" lose the plant. I also read my post again and I cannot find 1 complaint. All I stated was his price range. I'm also not really interested in whether my daylily is registered or not. I already have 50 different varities that I purchased years ago from a man in Milton who was closing his business and for all 50 it cost me approx $60. I had already purchased from him before his big "close-out" and none of his daylilies were over $50. I realize this was a rare occasion.

I'm sorry I offended you, mbmberg, but I didn't mean it quite that way. I can see it might have sounded that way though. I just meant everybody, including me, wants an inexpensive plant, and I think we all tend to fuss sometimes about the prices. Lots of people fuss about the prices at Durio's in Opelousas, and they are often out of my reach, so maybe it's 'sour grapes', but when I've bought things from them I've been very happy with them. I used to go down to Guidry's every year and buy a few things--just haven't been able to get down since her son took over. I really didn't mean to be obnoxious, even though I succeed pretty well sometimes!

Hmmm... Not to imply that there's anything wrong with it, but is this forum mostly for people who spend lots of money on plants and are highly discriminatory about their origin?
If so, I might not fit in, because I obtain most of my plants by trading, buying them cheap, and digging them (with permission) out of friends and neighbors' yards. Are there any other members like myself? Just asking because I'm new, and want to make sure I know what to expect. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I think we probably vary a lot, even in the things one person grows--trades are good, and I trade or give plants quite often. If there's a plant family I'm particularly interested in I might spend more for something I really want, but one thing I learned long ago--the $300 daylily will come down in price, usually fairly rapidly, and be quite affordable in a few years. If you are trading or hybridizing it might pay to get an expensive plant or two so you have something to trade--I often would rather just give a plant away than trade for stuff I got rid of years ago. One thing that's important to learn here, is that a plant that's suited to our climate will increase very rapidly. We often say, it'll either take over or die. So you can quickly have enough to trade, but most folks who do trades want to get something of approximately equal value back. And I don't get the impression that there are too many people here who only grow the 'latest and best'. If any.

If you need #s to any of these or others email me
Ill send you links and contacts for the ones i previously purchased from

There's a small daylily farm in French Settlement. I don't even think it has a name, just a sign that says "daylillies".It is on La. Hwy 16. If you are coming from Port Vincent it will be to the left, from Head of Island, it will be on the right. I have lived here 20 years and never visited it. I will have to check it out to see if they have some of the older varieties.

Most of mine came from a friend, she is very generous with her extras at dividing time. I would dig one up off side of the road if I saw it blooming. LOL

Have you thought about sharing with others who have different types for free? Maybe start a share program with others that have written you back. I live in Massachusetts at the present time and have some 30 different varieties. I am originally from Natchitoches and hope to move back there soon. I need to sell 2 houses here before my return. ( My daylilies are moving with me )!. For now, I go to the farms around here and get them. Most of what I have are dormant variety that I am not sure if they will do well in Louisiana. I would love to share/swap with you when I get there (after all, they will be out of the ground).

‘I agree, spending $300 for one is just to much for the average person, but, if your a big collector or broader it may be a “mush have”.

‘I will be making one more stop at my local farm MT Bobbins shortly before the move. You can find them on Facebook or www.mtbobbins-daylilies.com

The prices are reasonable, they will ship, and the plants are the healthiest I’ve ever gotten. Some of what they have is a local variety, (Monadnock). I’ve gotten a few spider variety from them too that I am crazy about. Check them out.

    Hope you keep in touch,

    Brenda
