Plan on planting fall tomatoes?

I haven't put in a fall tomato crop in years, but I'm thinking of a couple Sun Gold cherries. I've been harvesting about a pint a day for the past week and even though that'll continue for a while longer, I know the plants will eventually slow down and the stink bugs will take over. They're way too tall & rambling to try and nurse through the rest of the summer, so I'm probably going to germinate a few seeds in another week or 2 and start over. Just curious if anyone grows fall tomatoes and how successful you are.

Hi Natal, I'm thinking about it. My tomatoes are not really that out of control yet. I am container gardening so I would have to either build another earthtainer or pull the present tomatoes or bell peppers. (I only have 2 of those things built and really have enjoyed using them on those 2 veggies) I was thinking about using a sucker, perhaps in July, to fall garden the tomatoes....dunno!
I have one Beauty heirloom and one JellyBean growing next to each other now. I have nothing blushing yet.....:-(

I've never heard of either of those varieties. Are they good, or first year growing?

Hey Natal, the Beauty is growing quite well. It's my first year growing them and I am happy. I picked my first one this morning since it started blushing a couple of days ago. The JellyBean is a cherry and it's growing well also. Not sure if I will grow it again as it's not an heirloom. Neither plant has had any problems so far. I am going to attempt to save seed from the Beauty just to see what happens. I'll let you know how it tastes.

I've always found cherry tomatoes took the heat real well, even thrived on it. Do you garden organicly or do you use commercial poisons to control insects?

Jim, I keep it organic. Have been really lucky this season ... no aphids (except on the milkweed) and no stinkbugs. I know they're coming, but so far...

You're right about the cherry tomatoes, but the plants really start looking ragged about now. I transplanted in mid March.

What are you growing?

I am going to plant 444's. Going to plant them in hay bales. Two plants to the bale. A friend in my community planted his like this this summer and has had great results. I build my wife a greenhouse last winter and have room to raise the tomatoes in there. I'm trying for fresh tomatos for Christmas when our daughter comes in from Ohio.

Stink bugs. I have many on my plants, do they damage plants. I thought it was our birds, etc. What do they do to your tomatoes?

What do Stink Bugs look like?

It's very hot today and my two cherry tomatoes look good.

Crayphish, so how does the Beauty taste?

Jim, when will you plant those 444s?

Pulled all my tomato plants except the 4 Sun Gold cherries. Killing a few stink bugs every day now. I'm only growing Sun Golds in the fall garden. Started one from seed and the others from suckers. I'll probably transplant in a couple more weeks.

Jacos and Nina, I'm linking a thread on stink bugs from the tomato forum.

Here is a link that might be useful: stink bugs

Hey Natal, well, I wasn't too impressed with the Beauty. The first one picked was 14 oz. It was good, just not as robust as I had hoped for. It is suffering from a bit of BER now but the JellyBean grape toms, in the same 'earthtainer' as the Beauty, are fine. Not sure if I am going to grab a sucker from both and plant for the fall.

I've planted 3 Roma's from Johnny's for the fall. I have one in a container and the other two are waiting for their own containers.

Crayphish, well you never know until you try. I was disappointed in a few of my new trials this year too, but that's part of gardening.

Planted my Sun Golds this past week. The flea beetles didn't waste any time turning the leaves to lace. Now I remember why I don't grow fall tomatoes, lol.

I have not had too many pest problems. Not sure why. I have executed some hornworms and some stink bugs. The flea beetles showed up on the eggplant but really didn't stay long or do much damage.
