Crepe Myrtles Outstanding This Year

My wife and I have both exclaimed this year that the crepe myrtles seem to be putting on a better than average performance. Some of them are literally covered with so many blossoms that it's hard to see the leaves. Outstanding. I live in Broadmoor subdivision in Baton Rouge but they are spectacular all over town.

I've noticed the same thing (in BR). The two in our side yard have been weighed down with blossoms. Wonder what's so magical about this year. Longer spring?

I live in Gonzales. Have commented on the same thing. Never seen them so gorgeous. I think it is because we had a spring that lasted more than the usual two weeks. Thank Goodness.

i have about 20 lining my drive and spread thru out the front and back yard. every one of them is loaded with blooms like you describe. now the problem is getting close enough to cut the grass under the ones on the drive. the previous owner allowed those to grow as they pleased and never pruned them back. the lower limbs are literally less than a foot off the ground, and there are as many as 15 main trunks all twisted around each other. the ones in the yard were pruned to be slender with the limbs not starting until around the 5 foot high mark.

this winter there will be a good pruning happening at my house. the crepes are nice looking, but i have too much yard work to do to spend 3 hours trimming around them. my wife absolutely loves them as they are though. i think i will let her cut the yard this weekend and see how much she loves them after that!

anyone know if a tree service would be interested in removing a few for free? ;-)

David, you sound like my dh and we only have 2. LOL

My solution to the edging problem is to have beds around all of my trees lined with two rows of bricks placed in the ground so DH can ride his lawnmower wheel right on the bricks. You could plant camellias or azaleas under your crepe myrtles and some perennials.

i would go for beds under them, but they HAVE to be pruned back first. the limbs literally hang almost to the ground and some of them are close to 15 foot across, not just high but WIDE!
