I planted some butterfly ginger about this time of the season the year before last. I have them in 3 different locations, south, east, and west side of house. They grew very well, esp. the east side, all last season and have done really well again this summer, but no blooms. My soil is rich and I have mulched with well rotted "barn dust", but still no blooms! Can anyone suggest anything?

Mine just started blooming this past weekend. And my friend's started blooming last week. You might just want to give them some more time.

Ginger lilies need a lot of water. Ours have been blooming for several weeks because we've had tons of rain. However, in dry years we hardly get any blooms unless we water well.

Do you know what kind of butterfly ginger? Cornarium? (They seem to be the most common. The white butterflies.)Different varieties bloom at different times of the year. (For me anyway) My Yellow Spot Hedychium has been blooming for a few weeks. My Cornariums started blooming this week. Some are budding and some I don't expect to bloom till october or November. Some are also more reliable bloomers than others. Also how much sunlight. I find most of my hedychiums seem to do better with a good bit more sun than we're told. I also understand they need not just our long growing seasons. And mild winters. But also the heat of summer. But that shouldn't be a problem for you.

Mine have just started blooming this week as well, I agree that you probably just need to give them a little more time. Betty

I've seen fields of them blooming in open areas of the Ecuadorian jungle. Does that tell you anything about the conditions they like? Wet feet, hot, humid weather, and blazing sun.
