| Has anyone grown Fak Kiow (Asian Vegetable) or papaya in southern LA or MS from seed? What are the soil/light/water requirements if you have grown them.

| I've never heard of Fak Kiow, but I often grow papayas from seed. I plant them indoors in the late winter and set them out in full sun as soon as the danger of frost is past, say, late March. They grow fast and will cover themselves with papayas, but our growing season just isn't long enough to ripen the fruit. I harvest them green and use them in green papaya salads. They are such spectacular plants with huge palmate leaves and these papayas hanging off the trunk that it's rewarding to grow them even without the possibility of harvesting a ripe, juicy papaya. Which is not to say that I wouldn't love to be able to do so. |
