I would like you to try growing vetiver on the side that is the closest to the water. The roots hold the soil and it can be a good experiment for preventing soil erosion. If you e-mail me, we can discuss this.

hold your soil together like nothing else. And, when you do dig it up, you can rinse off the soile and save the roots; they make linens smell wonderful.

Does your property get water on it at certain times of the years and are you close to the water? If so, the salt water will be a problem. You will need plants that tolerate salt water.

There's black mangrove all round Bay Champagne (Fourchon).
There's some nice native mallows.
Think about using native Louisiana irises ('Abbeville Red' etc.)
I think Spartina (salt marsh grass) is pretty, and it's green. The sedges are the grey marsh grasses and they would be nice for color.

Drive down Hwy 1, or go across the bayou to the other side and just look around and see what you might find...
