Christmas plant? need ID

I was in St. Bernard Parish, LA, last week and saw a plant that had small lobed leaves similar to those of an oak tree. It reminded me of a poinsettia because the top leaves had some bright red parts, just like the bracts of a poinsettia, although the leaves were not all red. It also had stamens like a poinsettia. It was about 15-18" tall. I was told it was called Christmas plant. I don't have a good specimen or camera to send a photo. Any idea what it is?

Did you see in in a friends garden or a public area....Where in St Bernard did you see it? Have no idea what you are talking about but my mom will....and she lives in St. Bernard.....I also happen to be going to see her tomorrow. Maybe I can have her look at it.

Sounds like a wild poinsettia. Is this what it looks like? http://home.att.net/~larvalbugrex/poinsettia2.jpg

That's it! Perfect photo! I found it in front of a home on Farmsite Rd in Violet. We were doing some work on the house, and I could tell that the landscape was very pretty before Katrina. There was a beautiful Bird of Paradise in front by the door. It only grows as a houseplant here, and does not bloom easily. Thanks for your help. Lynn

I have that plant. The friend who gave it to me called it a Hypocrite Plant. I knew it was some kind of poinsettia because of the similarity. It is very invasive. Seeds spread everywhere.
