do you grow garlic?

I've been visiting the Gourmet Garlic Gardens site and thinking about trying a little garlic in the fall garden. I would've loved to try some of the Creole varieties, but most are either not available this year or only available as part of a sampler assortment.

If you grow garlic where do you buy your bulbs? Which varieties have the most success?

I heard Felder Rushing say on Friday's radio program that you should plant it in October and plan to harvest the bulbs next spring. He said if a flower stem comes up, to break it off so the plant's energy will be forced into the bulbs. You can just buy a bulb of garlic at the grocery, break it apart, and plant the cloves.

I planted some this way back in the spring. The greens were pretty and very delicious in salads and stir fries, but, of course, when our heat moved in, it quit.

I am going to try again this fall.

I don't have garlic now, but planted it several years ago. You can find several varieties available using a google search.
I always planted mine around Thanksgiving and harvested it the next spring.

Since I only have a small area to dedicate to garlic I guess I'll see what I can find locally.

Natal, just FYI, the garlic I planted in the spring, that went dormant this summer, is coming up again!

Donna, does that mean you'll have a fall harvest afterall?

There was a local grower at Jackson's Greater Belhaven Market last year, who had a type of Garlic whose entire bulb consists of just one clove. The flavor is really, really, rich, and we still have a few cloves, in perfect condition, in a crisper drawer of the fridge (more than a year after we bought them). I'd love to know what variety that is.

And it's great to see that someone else appreciates Garlic Greens! I think they have the best flavor in the world. I'm amazed that no one grows it to sell at the Rainbow Co-op. But then, growers tell me that people here are confounded by unfamiliar produce, and won't buy it, because they can't figure out what to do with it.

I have no idea, natal! I am going to watch it and see what happens. Will keep you posted. This is what keeps gardening interesting.

plan 9, this does not surprise me in the least. I see the same thing around here. Truth to tell, I think folks are afraid of "wasting money" on something they might not like. Unfortunately, they're missing out of some wonderful things!
