Does anyone know if there is an asian grocery or supermarket anywhere near the Lafayette or New Iberia areas?
I can't seem to find one and I wanted to look for tropical fruit or tubers that I can grow seeds or plants from. Thanks

Thanks for your reply but I was asking about Asian supermarkets or grocery stores for actual tropical fruits. In many states there are Asian specialty stores that carry unusual and exotic fruit and tubers from which you can use to collect and grow your own fruit trees and spices. I have been to Stokes Tropicals Nursery and though they have a nice selection of bananas, gingers, and some spices, they dont carry what I am looking for. I guess I will just have to order stuff online.

If you find any around here, please post it, sj. I've been looking too, but don't get out much (sick husband) and also in Lafayette area.

Just read the Aug. 30 edition of The Independant, a 'give-away' weekly, and they had an article on ethnic markets in Lafayette. Among the Italian, Mexican, Lebanese, etc. markets was S&P Oriental Market, to my disgust within walking distance of me. (I thought it was a restaurant. Shoulda checked it out!) The article says Som Vang Sonemangkhala arrived in New Iberia via Thailand in 1986, and opened Asia Market on Hopkins Street in New Iberia. Since this is a Lafayette paper, it doesn't say anything about it beyond the fact that his wife got it in their divorce. He moved to Lafayette, where he opened in the small strip mall behind Baskin-Robbins on Johnson Street in 1999. The market carries Laotian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino Thai, and Japanese specialties. Fruit it mentions is miniature royal bananas, green papaya, lychee, Asian pears, fuyu persimmons and hairy red rambutan. Also galanga root, which is the main reason I was looking for an Asian market!

Thanks Greenelbows!!
I am glad you found that. I kinda gave up lol. I typed in the name of the supermarket and found the link to that article you read. I am going to try to get some lychee and rambutan. What is gangla root used for? If you go there before me, let me know what you got lol. I probably wont get up there till next week. I live SE of Layfayette aways.
Here is the link to that article in case others want to read it.

Galanga is the native name for one kind of 'elephant ears', a kind of fascination of mine. I understand there's a lot of variation in them and you stand a chance of getting something really different, and they're MUCH cheaper than you get from nurseries that handle them. May not be best to get them 'til next spring for growing though.
Some years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Thailand for a much-too-short time, and wished very much I had good guidance in trying the fascinating fruits we saw. We went to a place for lunch once where regular Thai people ate and the food was amazing, but we had no idea what we were eating. Really wish we knew. Maybe now I'll have a chance to check some things out--sounds like he can be quite helpful.
