I was listening to gardening program on the radio, the host said it was a good idea to fertilize flowers in fall with a formula especially for fall. I have seen a lot of fertilizers in stores ,never saw a Fall Fertilizer.Does anyone have any idea what this fertilizer consists of?

Lord don't use 13-13-13! (Sorry Jim didn't mean to yell ;-) Nitrogen promotes foliage growth. Fresh green growth will die quick with the first frost. You want all growth hardened off for winter not fresh growth. I have never heard of a "Fall" fertilizer either but if you want root growth go for bone meal. Or even better apply a mulch that will protect the plants over winter and by next spring the mulch will have pretty well rotted (don't use bark or pine needles in this case) and will have been releasing natural fertilizers into the soil all winter.

If you have good well amended soil that you add lots of organic matter to, then "fertilizing" becomes a moot point. The plant will have lots of available nutrients and take just what it needs whatever time of year it is.

What about the evergreens(cast iron, monkey grass, boxwoods, etc.)? Do they grow in the winter? Do they need fertilizing? I know that my winter veggies do BETTER when fertilized.
Thanks,

With the veggies you want to promote growth. I still use compost whenever I can. Too much Nitrogen will make the veggies frost tender.
With boxwood and the others you listed you want it to go dormant. Any fresh tender growth will simply freeze and die. You want growth in the spring not over winter. Oh and I believe the "Fall" fertiler must be something like bonemeal which is a source phosphorus which promotes root growth.
