Forest Hill nurseries

Hi, Louisiana gardeners,

I'm next door in north Texas, and I am about to go with a fellow gardener on the road for a week in Louisiana. We'd like to go to Forest Hill. I've been there before, and am familiar with two open-to-the-public places, Doug Young and Harold Poole. Can someone there tell me which others might be open to the public that would be good to go to? I'm interested in perennials, small shrubs, but not trees (no room in the SUV).

I'll be online the rest of today, but on the road afterward. I'll check in on the laptop every day, as we plan our Forest Hill visit toward the end of the week.

Thanks for all your help.

Marcia

RE: Forest Hill nurseries

I hope you had a successful trip. My friend and I made the rounds of some nurseries last weekend, only to find that inventories were very low. We've had a very hot and mostly dry summer. In a couple of weeks the pansies and snapdragons will be in, and I just ordered six Cajun Hibiscus online, (bday present from my DH).

RE: Forest Hill nurseries

Mrskjun,

We just got back, and I brought back all I could find room for in our smallish SUV. We saw those Cajun Hibiscuses and were smitten, but decided not to get one now, as it would have to be overwintered. We may go back in the spring and hope they have some then. I noticed that some of the stock was suffering, but seemed to be coming back with all the rain we had last week. We got to Louisiana on Monday, but didn't get to Forest Hill until Friday morning -- we were touring plantations, in the rain.

The only places I know to go are Harold Poole's, Doug Young's and Sam Stokes. I have been to Clyde Holloway's, too, a few times in the past, but didn't go this time. Are there others I should know about?

I did acquire a lovely Pride of Barbados at Sam Stokes that made the trip for me. The one I got in San Antonio last year did not survive the Texas summer, and this new one is three times as big at half the price I paid in San Antonio. Hoping for the best with it.

Thanks again for your help, and happy birthday! I've got a September B-Day, too.

Marcia
