Fall Potato Success or Failure?

I've grown a vegetable garden for most of my years. But, I've given up on planting potatoes in the spring because most tend to rott in my heavy soil before I can harvest them. Also, I'd rather dedicate the space to something else. However, I do have a bit of space leftover in this year's fall garden and was wondering if a fall potato crop might have worked for me. I know it's too late for this year. But there is always next year. I was wondering, what is the experience out there with a fall potato planting. How do your fall potatoes look?

With limited space, I think it's better to plant more expensive vegetables.
