Controlling Lantana

The lantana planted in my flower beds did great- TOO great since they over-grew several other plants including some old roses. I don't want to remove them, but would like to try and limit their exuberant overgrowth. I am considering digging them up this winter, root pruning them and putting them in pots that I sink into the beds. My thoughts are that limiting the root growth would curb the exuberant foliage growth and make it a better neighbor to the other plants. Opinions? Other suggestiongs for managing lantana in a bed wtih other plants? Thanks!

RE: Controlling Lantana

In both extreme south Louisiana (coastal) and northeast Mississippi, I just prune the lantana as needed. As the summer progresses, they do tend to overtake the other plants, for example, I have knockout roses, nandina, and cleyera in the bed, I just prune the lantana away from the other plants. You can just tip prune it or Prune it all the way to a main stem.

What type of lantana do you have? If it's the creeping lantana, it can root very easily; if a stem's touching the ground, it can root. Very hard, very floriferous, and very rampant!
