Learning about nurseries!

Over the last few months, there have been a few discussions about backyard nurseries on another forum, the professional gardener" on this site. It was suggested in that discussion, and other threads on this subject, that anyone wishing to learn more about nurseries in a particular region of the country talk to nursery owners that might be willing to share a brief glimpse of nurseries in that region.

I have an interest in this subject, and have discussed it on that forum. I live in the mid Ms area, and would love to find out more about having a nursery in our area/region. On the off chance there is a nursery owner lurking around on this site that would be willing to field a few newbie questions concerning plants, hoop houses, watering issues, ect...............please feel free to post back here, or contact me privately.

Thanks,

Dan

Hey Dan,

I'm not a nursery owner/farmer yet...but perhaps within 18 months up in the Carolinas after I sell my home here in Baton Rouge.

You should order the book produced by the owner of Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh.

Also, bookmark http://www.growit.com/

You should look also into installing a number of bee hives to produce honey, propolis, pollen, and royal jelly to sell at your nursery: http://www.beesource.com/

RE: Learning about nurseries!

James,

Thanks for the reply and the info. I briefly looked at the PDN site. I am going to check it out in more detail later today.

A neighbor down the road has a huge bee operation over this part of the county. No shortage of bees here.

I should be receiving my copy of Tony Avents book any day now. I have heard it said that his book is actually for starting a large nursery, but I feel sure the principles are the same and can be applied to a smaller startup nursery.

Good luck in your upcoming move and plans on your nursery/farm at your new home.

Dan
