Good climbing vine/flower

| I'm looking for a pretty, hardy climbing vine with color or flowers. It would go in front of a wood fence, full sun. I live in Thibodaux and would bring in some good dirt in a big hole to start off the plant. I love the way bouganvilla looks but it can freeze.
Any suggestions?
Thanks! |

| Star (Confederate) jasmine is evergreen with wonderfully scented blooms early spring. I have mine interplanted with Mexican Flame vine which blooms late spring till frost. |

| Just saw this post, as I am a newbie, from central Louisiana. Several years ago, before my mother passed away, I finally found a climber that she had been wanting for years. She called it Rosa Montana, also known as coral vine. I finally found a nursery in Texas where I could order it, which I did. Planted it upon receipt and it turned out to be one of the prettiest plants I have ever seen. You could research on google and probably find a picture of it. Good luck, Dona. |

| I'm in Baton Rouge and I can highly recommend coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens). Orange/red flowers that bloom most of the year and evergreen foliage. It's well-behaved, unlike its cousin, Japanese honeysuckle. I'll second the nomination of confederate jasmine. It thrives on our vegetable garden fence and has spread about 30 feet. The flowers carry a sweet scent but it can be overpowering from a big specimen. |

| The right antique China rose would give you blooms ten months of the year in Thibodeaux. Climbing Old Blush (pink) is the most obvious choice: but there are a few more, like Cramoisi Superieur (red). And there are a bunch of new climbing 'Miniatures' that might work, if they can take the heat. Some of the 'Miniatures' can reach six or eight feet, and are generally extremely healthy. But the China roses are actually authentic for your area. If grown on their own roots, they can live for over a century. You also might want to research Clematis Armandii, which is evergreen and has big leaves (fragrant white flowers in Spring, only). Wayside Gardens lists it as appropriate for zones 7-9. I'm surprised, though, that you'd have to bring good dirt into Thibodeaux. I thought all the dirt down there was great. Oh! And Ashdown Roses may now be offering the climbing sport of Le Vesuve, one of the most beautiful Chinas (one which reportedly needs full sun). Le Vesuve will be in bloom during all but the very coldest months. |
