Holey Pea Problems

Hi guys! Last year I saved a few peas from my Oregon Sugarpod II. I just opened my envelope of them back up and I found something strange.

Many of the snow pea seeds had holes in them. The holes are perfectly round and go into the pea about three quarters of the way (not all the way, like a bead for a necklace). The rest seem fine.

I was wondering what might cause this hole problem. Was it some sort of borer? I did not see any signs of bugs (dead or alive) in the packet. Maybe a fungus or virus?

How can I prevent this from happening again?

Thank you so much for any help and advice you can give!
