RED SWAN BUSH BEAN (Phaseolus vulgaris) is a truly unique development for snap beans. The result of a life-long passion of bean breeding by the late Robert Lobitz (1941-2006) this is a wonderful open-pollinated stabilized cross between a purple snap bean and a pinto. Best described as dusty red-rose, pods are 4-5" long, well flavored and free of strings. One of my biggest sellers and destined to become an heirloom! Bush habit, 52-58 days.

If these descriptions are to be believed this must be an outstanding bean that looks stunning, both the flowers and pods, and tastes excellent too.

Probably a little OT, Mauirose; but for anyone interested in beans, a question worth answering.

Sadly, Robert passed away several years ago. He was a long-time SSE member, and a passionate breeder of many crops, including beans & soybeans. His seed collection - which was enormous - was offered through the SSE Yearbook. In terms of the number of varieties he offered, he was among SSE's top 10 of all time. He was a true champion of preservation, and will be sorely missed.

After his death, there was a cooperative effort (which included several SSE members) to preserve his collection. The founder of Peace Seeds, among others, assumed parts of the bean collection.

Robert was responsible for my interest in soybeans; we corresponded several times, and he was as generous with his knowledge as he was with his seeds. He is, in large part, the inspiration for my own preservation efforts. I maintain many of his soybeans, and hope to keep them publicly accessible.
