Crowder Peas, Pink-eyes - Will they 'make' twice?

I am growing crowders for the first time this year. I'm also growing pink eye purple hulls, grew them last year, but didn't take very good notes... I've harvested the pink eyes pretty thoroughly for about 2 weeks now, the plants don't have many new flowers. Will they flower again like bush beans? Would it help to give them a clip? Or do I tear them out and start again? Same question for the crowders - they are producing heavily now and we love the flavor.

I grow Hercules peas. They bear heavy, then a lull depending on the heat and water. But they keep producing for me. I would think you can replant in August in your area. I have never clipped, so I don't know.

Thank you both! My Pink eyes are looking really puny, but the crowders are still growing strong. Gosh we love these peas and it's hard to find them commercially other than dried...

They don't taste the same dried, I love them fresh and/or frozen while fresh!

My hercules are starting to bloom, the late frost killed my first planting. My mouth waters just looking at the blooms!!!! Good thing I ordered extra seeds!

We've been "taste-testing" different varieties. So far, the brown crowders are winning, pink eyes, black crowders and last the black eyed peas. Funny how these have become a high point of gardening and 10 years ago I had never heard of them!

Ted - I hope yours are quick to make peas - the waiting is tough!

Cindy, I must not have looked close enough, I've got some pods 3" to 4" long!

I was picking tomatoes when I spotted the blooms, the peas were 20' away and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. It was too hot to linger very long, so I didn't inspect them.

Have you tried Hercules? They were developed by Clemson and I like them better than any others that I have tried.

I am tempted to start the water boiling! LOL

Woohoo Ted! I haven't tried Hercules, but now it's on the list! I find the peas a surprise too. They start to be ready to eat unpredictably. I saw some full pods below most of the leaves when I was weeding another bed. Happy find!

I'm headed out to see if I can find a few not covered in yellowjackets for dinner tonight. It's been terrible this year - those things are vicious.

I found 14 pods that were ready today. I shelled, cooked, and ate them about 10 minutes ago. It was only a few bites, but they were better than anything from the garden all year!

I'll have more later this week if the deer don't get them!

The only place that I have been able to find them is the SC Crop Improvement Association.
