Having Trouble With Beans

For years now I've been thoroughly convinced that beans were a garden plant an individual could just stick in the ground and they would grow! Not anymore. I have planted and replanted numerous types of beans this year (Jacobs Cattle, Blue Bush, Missouri Wonder, etc) and the same thing keeps happening. They germinate, sprout a couple leaves and within a week the leaves disappear and the plant dies. It's the oddest thing.... We've been having a very wet and hot spring/summer, could that be a cause? I don't think it's my soil as I've grown beans in much worse before. Would love to hear any thoughts.
