Segregating a new bean variety

leira

Quite unexpectedly, I have a volunteer pole bean in my garden that appears to be a hybrid between an Italian flat-podded variety and a purple-podded variety. It's pretty interesting!

I'm thinking of saving the seeds and trying to select a stable flat, purple-podded variety.

Do any of you have any advice?

One of my big questions is: Are all of the beans in a pod genetically identical, or do they vary within a pod?

I've only got one vine, growing in a non-ideal location, so I'm not sure it will produce a large number of pods...not only that, but it appears that its growing tip has broken off, so the pods currently on the vine may be all that I get.
