Too late in zone7 for black-eye peas?

I have had very poor harvest this summer with my beans. Heat and no rain. I got a few packs of black-eyed peas on sale (10 cents) and wondered if I could expect a small crop in October if I plant now. I know what the catalogs say and what the seed packet says -but- what do the experts here on GW say?? So folks - what say you?? I'm in Virginia zone 7+ we usually get our first light frost in late October or mid-November and some years we get the first frost in early December. With black-eyed peas is it heat or day length??

Thanks,

DL
