Easy on the Nitrogen part of the fert, otherwise you risk getting lots of dark-green leaves and few flowers/pods. Don't use a chemical-based fert if it kills your earthworms. Get one that includes needed trace elements.

This year, I've used (the much too expensive) Neptune's Kelp/Fish liquid at 1/2 strength, + a sidedress of kompost, + mulch of dry leaves. But I'm no expert, just a backyard grower.

Warning about the fish fert: Coons like to dig the ground where it has been used. Remedy: electric fence...... or don't use fishy ferts....

Just remembered another remedy (but not as foolproof as electric fence): Very hot ground dry chili stirred into fragrant peanut butter. Smear a little of this concoction at intervals at perimeter of veg.garden. Needs to be refreshed when eaten, or old, or after rains; you know the regiment....
