pole beans dying tiny white bugs

My pole beans died this year, barely producing a handful of beans. When we pulled them out there were tiny white round bugs on the roots. Not maggots. Looked like sesame seeds. Any ideas what these are, if they were the cause of the plants dying and what to do now?

They are nitrogen fixating bacteria nodules, which are beneficial to the plants. All peas and beans have them on their roots.
