string bean woes

I have major problems with my string bean and bush beans.
I start them indoors because the growing season were I live is very short. But there are farmers here who grow them without too much problems. I tried to start them out in the garden but they wont germinate outside. I have tomato plants not too far away from the string beans and they do fine. I do get some string beans and they are good tasting. The plants never take off for some reason and produce a lot of beans. I did have some japanese beetles go after the leaves but not enough to cause this. Its like the plant are stunted and struggle to grow. The soil I grow in is extremely acidly, i don't know if that makes any difference. I am sincerely considering growing them in planters (will this work?) I also plowed in good compost before I transplanted them in the garden.
