Bean Beetle Larva

drmbear Cherry

My bush beans are about played out - it's been a good run - and I'm looking to take out the plants. Although I had very little infestation, now that I'm ready to take them out, I'm finding they are covered with bean beetle larva, chewing away. Part of the advantage of growing beans is that the plants are awesome for composting or turning into the soil, but what to do about the infestation? If I can eliminate all of these, it seems it would reduce my problems next year. I don't want to just haul away these nutrient-rich plants. Does anyone have any ideas for making sure these bean beetles are dead before returning this stuff to the garden? I've been thinking to run all of it through my chipper-shredder, but I'm worried it won't really kill them all. What do you think?
