Planted Colossus and Quick Pick Pinkeye Purple Hull side by side. Picked today, shelled them out, and a few of the peas were pure shiny black! These are large peas, but not crowders like Colossus. Pod size not as big as Colossus but larger than Quick Pick. Hope to identify the plant(s) in the row and let some pods mature to save seed and grow out next year. Any ideas what are the possible names of this variety that got mixed in?

It could be a bee made cross. Save some seed and grow them next year. There are a few black cowpea varieties, one of them is known as "Black" appropriately enough.

A cross is the most likely scenario. Wouldn't you have noticed a black seed when you planted? I've had things like this happen with crosses. One time it was a cross between Black Crowder and Georgia Long. I saved seed, finding that the second generation cross differentiated into different mixes of characteristics between the two.
