Using bean plants to enrish the soil?

I vaguely remember bean plants enrich the soil. How can an urban gardener put it into practice? I had one gorgeous hyacinth bean plant, but it got so huge it collapsed the wire mesh support. I took down the whole plant - leaves, vines, and lots of tough bean pods, and roughly cut them into pieces about 6 inches long. Aside from going into my compost pile can this chopped stuff be used to enrich the soil? If I put the stuff directly over my vegetable bed will I get zillions of hyacinth plants next year? That is a scary thought.
